I was watching a Science Channel special on galaxies, and they were kvelling that we, presumably the human race, would be in big trouble because the Andromeda galaxy, M31, is heading toward the Milky Way. The authors then explained all of the horrific things that would happen when this collision happened. It was about twenty five minutes into the special that they pointed out that this event would happen beginning in about 2 billion years or so. The fact that the Sun would have probably gone nova and expanded to the orbit of Mars was not mentioned until the end of the program. Here are two photos of the Death Star Galaxy, 3C321. The second is from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory unenhanced. The first is also from the Chandra, enhanced.
