Dear God our Father,
Your word tells us, “Unless the LORD build the house, they labor in vain who build. Unless the LORD guard the city, in vain does the guard keep watch” (Psalm 127:1).
Thank You for those who have guarded not only our cities, but our country, allies, and many other communities from unjust and unprincipled aggressors. On this Memorial Day, with a solemn and sacred spirit, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women in our Armed Forces who gave up their lives for their fellow Americans at home and abroad. Many were young and many were married, with their loved ones praying for them back home; but they were each fighting to protect the freedom we enjoy when they were called to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Dear God, please bless our heroes and heroines with Your mercy, grace, and peace. Bless also their families and friends. May Your perpetual light shine upon them; and may their souls and the souls of all our faithful departed rest in peace. In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Dennis Hopper
Dennis Hopper has died. His career spanned the “golden years” of live television to today. He costarred with some of the legends of Hollywood, John Wayne, James Dean, and Paul Newman. He received an Oscar nomination for “Hoosiers”. He directed himself and was directed by Coppola, Corman, and Lynch. He was an original. A little gin-soaked but original nonetheless.

Our Friends in Germany
Not to let our japanese Allies off the hook.

Dr. Evil, Ishii Shiro conducted thousands of "experiments" on the inhabitants of and prisoners brought to Harbin China. Because he had been granted immunity by the occupation government, he was in no danger after and died in 1967 of cancer.
{lease note that I have not even mentioned the "Rape of Nanking" or the Bataan Death March. Let us apologize to the poor interned enemy aliens who supported this regime.

A more modern view
Women of Israel
This is from the Challoner-Rheims edition, so the spelling is bizarre, 1 Judges, Chapter Four:
4 And there was at that time Debbora a prophetess the wife of Lapidoth, who judged the people,
5 And she sat under a palm tree, which was called by her name, between Rama and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for all judgment.

5 And she sat under a palm tree, which was called by her name, between Rama and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for all judgment.
John the Evangelist: The Disciple whom Jesus Loved
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

Ayn Rand was Wrong
Possibly because she was not an American by birth, she accepted the common summary of Robin Hood's life as, "He took from the rich and gave to the poor." At least that is how Ragnar Danneskjöld summarizes him in his meeting with Hank Reardon. This is a common statement, but it is false. What Hood did was take from those who misused the taxes they collected from the people. Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, Sire Guy of Gisbourne, and the Abbot of the Blackfriars, all misuse taxpayer money. Hood has no problem with the collection of Richard the Lionheart's ransome as that is a legitimate use of public funds, at least it was in the twelfth century. Personal enrichment is not, so Hood confiscates it and returns it to the people. He also protects, as far as he is able the people from brutal methods of tax collection

Unhappy Thought But Helpful
Ephesians 6:10-12:
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might, put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the Devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places".

Happy Thought
Whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears; to your confidence rather than your doubts. My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty's lamp guiding your steps and opportunity's arm steadying your way." -- Ronald Reagan

The 9/11 Mosque
A new structure is set to rise at Ground Zero in New York City. However, it's not a memorial to the thousands brutally murdered there in 2001 by Islamic extremists, and it's not an office building to house revitalized American business. No, it's a mosque. Writing for Family Security Matters, Gary Adelman notes that the Community Board of Lower Manhattan unanimously approved the construction of a 13-story, $100 million mosque and community center just two blocks from where the World Trade Center stood. Beyond boasting questionable funding sources, the project -- proposed by the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) and its sister organization, the Cordoba Initiative -- shows complete disregard for the lives taken on September 11, and for those left behind.
Rosemary Cain, whose firefighter son George Cain was killed on 9/11, described the project as "a slap in the face. I think it's despicable. That's sacred ground. How could anybody give them permission to build a mosque there? It tarnishes the area." Retired FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches, who son Jim -- also a firefighter -- died in the attacks, stated, "I realize it's not all of them, but I don't want to have to go down to a memorial where my son died on 9/11 and look at a mosque. If you ask me, it's a religion of hate."
Adelman asks, "Have we lost our minds so much that we have moved to erecting monuments to perpetrators and not victims?" With this project, it seems, we have our answer.

On the Necessity of Punctuation
A panda walked into a cafe. He ordered a sandwich, ate it, then pulled out a gun and shot the waiter. 'Why?' groaned the injured man. The panda tossed him a badly punctuated wildlife manual. The waiter found an explanation. 'Panda,' ran the entry for his assailant. 'Large black and white mammal native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.
