Ayn Rand was Wrong

Possibly because she was not an American by birth, she accepted the common summary of Robin Hood's life as, "He took from the rich and gave to the poor." At least that is how Ragnar Danneskjöld summarizes him in his meeting with Hank Reardon. This is a common statement, but it is false. What Hood did was take from those who misused the taxes they collected from the people. Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, Sire Guy of Gisbourne, and the Abbot of the Blackfriars, all misuse taxpayer money. Hood has no problem with the collection of Richard the Lionheart's ransome as that is a legitimate use of public funds, at least it was in the twelfth century. Personal enrichment is not, so Hood confiscates it and returns it to the people. He also protects, as far as he is able the people from brutal methods of tax collection
